About Gamma Mu
Welcome to the Gamma Mu Chapter of Phi Mu at Western Carolina University! Founded on May 4, 1968, our chapter is proud to uphold a legacy of lifelong sisterhood, meaningful service, and lasting tradition. Our members are guided by the values of Love, Honor, and Truth, the same ideals established by our national organization in 1852. Throughout the years, Gamma Mu has continued to celebrate the moments that define our sisterhood. From the excitement of Bid Day, when new members run home to Phi Mu, to the beloved tradition of Big/Little Reveal, where each new member is paired with a Big Sister who offers friendship, mentorship, and unwavering support — every event strengthens the bonds we share. We honor our history on Founders Day each March 4th and take part in ritual ceremonies that connect us to generations of Phi Mus across the country. During Philanthropy Week, we join together to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, our national philanthropy, through creative events and service initiatives that directly impact children and families in need. Sisterhood is at the core of who we are, and we host a variety of events throughout the year—from themed socials and note-writing nights to our annual formal and overnight sisterhood retreat—all designed to foster connection, joy, and lifelong memories. Our chapter also meets weekly to plan, reflect, and grow together. Whether we’re organizing service events, supporting our campus, or simply enjoying time with one another, Gamma Mu continues to thrive as a welcoming, empowering community. Phi Mu is more than a chapter—it’s a home, a family, and a place to become your best self!

The Creed of Phi Mu
Adopted in 1916, Phi Mu’s Creed is the uniting statement that provides the basis for the Phi Mu member experience and defines what it means to be a noble woman. Although Phi Mu was founded on Christian values as referenced in our Creed, our organization welcomes women of any or no religious belief.
To lend to those less fortunate a helping hand.
To think of God as a protector and guide of us all.
To keep forever sacred the memory of those we have loved and lost.
To be to others what we would they would be to us.
To keep our lives gentle, merciful and just,
thus being true to the womanhood of love.
To walk in the way of honor, guarding the purity of our thoughts and deeds.
Being steadfast in every duty, small or large.
Believing that our given word is binding.
Striving to esteem the inner man above culture, wealth or pedigree.
Being honorable, courteous, tender,
thus being true to the womanhood of honor.
To serve in the light of truth, avoiding egotism, narrowness and scorn.
To give freely of our sympathies.
To reverence God as our Maker, striving to serve Him in all things.
To minister to the needy and unfortunate.
To practice day by day love, honor, truth.
Thus keeping true to the meaning, spirit and reality of Phi Mu.
Coat of Arms
Phi Mu’s coat of arms was designed in 1904 by Annie Laurie Mallory Parker and Louise Monning Elliott, who were both collegiate members of the Alpha Chapter at Wesleyan College.
The coat of arms consists of a red shield supported by two lions, our mascot. The shield includes the Phi Mu badge and under it is Phi Mu’s open motto, Les Soeurs Fideles, “the Faithful Sisters.” Above the shield is the crest, the lighted lamp of knowledge in gold.
